About RF IDeas

Cost Advantages Gained When Using Exisitng Proximity ID badges for Meeting HIPAA Computer Access Control Requirements

You need to factor in the costs associated with:

a. Software (initial and upgrades for the next x years),

b. Pilot Costs - When utilizing the pcProx-Sonar and pcProx-USB reader, this is practically nil since there is no software to test, debug, and evaluate,

c. Software Installation & Deployment - The  admin can order the USB and Sonar Devices already configured for his network. This means that the deployment amounts to attaching the USB cable. Since there is no software, there is no-reboot or other installation issues for the admin to deal with.

d. Software  Management Console - Since there is no software, there is no new software admininstrative application to learn, perform training, debug, etc.

e. Badge Deployment - If the employees have proximity badges, you make sue of what they have already.  Therefore there are no badges to issue to employees eliminating all the difficulties (employees on vacation etc.) with this process.

f . Badge Enrollment - There is no software, so the admin doesn't need to enroll each  employee and their associated token or fingerprint.

Active Badge vs. Passive Proximity or Contactless cards

  • Active badge costs are nearly 15-20 times more expensive- In large quantity the prox or contactless cards are in the $2 range.
  • The prox or contactless cards work with building access and gated parking lots
  • The prox or contactless cards work with cafeteria point of sale systems within hospitals so nurses, doctors etc. can purchase coffee, lunches etc via payroll deductions
  • The prox or contactless cards allow direct printing of hospital logos and employee full 4-color pictures
  • The prox or contactless card readers are less expensive There is no ambiguity of which nurse/doctor owns the terminal for HIPAA audit purposes
  • The convenience factor is solvable with a much lower cost, hands-free 5 ft., auto locking sensor that can take care of the convenience of auto-locking when users step away (pcProx-Sonar).
  • No batteries in the badges - so they always work. This affects the IT support staff once users start complaining their badges don't work.
