Weak Authentication Is the Factory Floor’s Most Urgent Security Challenge

In a new Manufacturing Business Technology article, Juan Martinez outlines the growing cybersecurity risks facing industrial environments as attacks surge across the manufacturing sector. Cyberattacks against manufacturers increased 61% year-over-year in 2025, the highest of any industry, with major brands like Jaguar Land Rover, Bridgestone and Nucor impacted.

Martinez explains that while many organizations have begun segmenting IT and OT networks or hosting applications locally to limit exposure, the most critical vulnerability often remains unaddressed: weak or nonexistent authentication on factory floor systems. Many operators can still walk up to an HMI or shared terminal and make changes without identity verification or rely on shared passwords posted at workstations. These practices create dangerous entry points for attackers and leave no audit trail when incidents occur.

The article highlights passwordless authentication as a key solution. By pairing secure badge readers with software that validates each operator’s identity, manufacturers can eliminate shared credentials, tighten access control, and create accountability, all without slowing production.
